The Golden Hourglass: Where Time Slowed and Love Took Over

They say French is the language of love. Shiv and Varsha took that quite seriously.

They met in school, in their French class. What began as tutoring slowly turned into long conversations, late-night chats, and eventually into becoming the first people they both wanted to speak to whenever anything happened in their lives.

When we were approached to design their cocktail night, the brief was clear. They wanted a black and gold Gatsby-inspired evening, a space where they could truly celebrate the fact that they just got married, surrounded by their people.

And in true Phool & Pheras fashion, we immediately dove into research. Not just to recreate Gatsby, but to figure out how to build a version that felt theirs unmistakably.

That’s how The Golden Hourglass came to life.

The idea was to create a speakeasy where, once you stepped in, time felt like it had slowed down. A space where the outside world faded and all that mattered was celebration. We played with heavier fabrics like velvet, layered with shimmery gossamer to add softness and movement. Pearls and gold accents were woven throughout to elevate the space and bring in that old-world glamour the theme demanded.

But the heart of the design lay in the details that made it personal.

French elements were subtly threaded through the evening, a quiet nod to where their story began. During our conversations, another thing that stood out was how much Shiv and Varsha loved long drives and stargazing. So naturally, we found a way to weave that in too. Cosmic details appeared gently across the space, from a tree behind the bar adorned with hanging stars, to thoughtful touches on each table that added another layer to the story.

No speakeasy is complete without its own identity, so we designed custom branding across the space. Coasters, tissues, monograms on the DJ booth, and cushions across the lounge area, every element felt cohesive and intentional. This also meant that all their drinks got a Gatsby-themed glow-up.

And of course, no party is complete without a little drama on the dance floor. We custom-made blingy sunglasses for guests to slip into the moment, letting the night unfold exactly the way it was meant to, loud, joyful, and unapologetically fun.

The Golden Hourglass wasn’t just a cocktail night. It was a celebration of time, of memories, and of a love that began in a classroom and grew into something truly timeless.
